I'm not talking about German Shepherds, or Pit Bulls.   Nope - not Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Chihuahuas, Terriers of any sort, Greyhounds, nor any of the Retrievers.  Not Poodles, or Great Danes.  Not Border Collies, Chow Chows, nor Pointers of any kind.​
In fact, I'm not talking about any one specific breed or group - but instead an entire community of dogs and their humans.

I am talking about the well-behaved, socially adept, well-adjusted dog and its owner.

Now, before you get offended - scoffing, sputtering, and jumping up and down to defend your own lovely pooch and his or her behavior - let's look at the facts, as seen through this dog trainer's eyes:

FACT:  In the past few years, I have seen a sharp rise in the number of cases that contact myself or at least one other trainer about aggression in their family pets.  In fact, the number of aggression or re-activity cases we see at Front Range K9 Academy has increased by 400%!

FACT:  More and more often when I spot a dog out in public, the dog is completely out of control - oblivious to the existence of its owner, let alone that there are things to be doing other than dragging about at the end of a retractable leash, peeing on everything, jumping on strangers, lunging and barking at other dogs - the list goes on and on.

FACT:  To make matters worse, the humans attached to these oblivious, unruly dogs seem to think that this state of affairs is completely normal.

Dare I say it? ...They think it's natural (and even worse), appropriate dog behavior.

 I suspect some of these same humans think that kids yelling and screaming and throwing things in public places like movie theaters and restaurants are also normal, appropriate behaviors.

Think about that.  An entire group of humans thinks this is just how dogs are; just what they do.

That appalls me.

Not only because I'm a dog trainer.  But because I am a dog lover.  A dog enthusiast.  A dog aficionado, if you will.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I live, eat, and breathe dogs and their behavior.

To see so many dogs bouncing off their environment, their owners, and each other with no help, no information, no communication from their humans is just sad.

No matter how you cut it, dogs are socially driven creatures that are simply happier when they have the same things that human children (another socially driven creature) need:

  • Information
  • Boundaries
  • Communication

These 3 things are missing in too many of America's dogs' lives.  We are letting them down.

If you're one of the people that this post is mildly (or even extremely) offensive to...

Or if you didn't know that dogs pulling on leashes, barking and lunging, jumping up, etc. are not normal, appropriate behaviors...

...DO something about it.

I don't care how you accomplish it - cookies, clickers, remote collars, old school methods, new school methods, scientific methods....Read a dog training book.  Or several.  Watch some YouTube videos.  Contact a training school and enroll your dog.

Just wake up and DO something about it.

How any one person chooses to train, socialize, or bring up their children or their dogs is not the subject of this post (I'll save that for another day).

JUST... DO... SOMETHING!

To those of you who are smuggly nodding your heads  - don't be too hasty.

Just because you took your dog to puppy class, or read about and trained the basics at home doesn't mean you're off the hook.  Over half of the dogs I work with each year have already graduated from some sort of training - sometimes 'with honors,' which makes me scratch my head, since they're often coming to see me for major aggression or other behavioral issues.  But I digress...

Your commitment to feeding and caring for the physical needs of your dog is for the life of the dog, right?

Well, your commitment to the mental, emotional, and behavioral health of your dog doesn't end when you get your puppy school graduation certificate.

Dogs are incredibly intelligent animals who need continued engagement and education from their humans for their entire lives.

You wouldn't stop communicating with and teaching your children as soon as they finished preschool or kindergarten!  Or at least I hope you wouldn't!

If you've already gotten the ball rolling, that's great - now your next step is to keep training.  Think of new, fun challenges for your dog and yourself.


I know that dogs who behave well are still out there.  I know they are - The trainers at Front Range K9 taught a little over 750 classes last year, and worked on teaching both dogs and their owners how to navigate a world where the dogs often seem to be as poorly behaved as many of today's human children.

I began this post saying that this 'dying breed' of dog (the well behaved companion) is disappearing.  And sadly, that is the truth.

Somewhere along the way, the word 'discipline' has gotten a bad reputation.  'Discipline' has become synonymous with 'punishment.'

But when we look at the definition of discipline, we see the following:

"training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character"

"the ability to keep working at something that is difficult"

"an activity that is done regularly as a way of training oneself to do something or to improve behavior"

None of these definitions appear to be bad ideas - for either dogs or humans.  We seem to have forgotten that just because a dog is made to behave at home and in public, doesn't mean the dog is unhappy, or the owner is mean.

I hope the next time you see a dog out in public you stop and look - not only to determine the breed, or to see how cute it is.... but really look at the dog's demeanor.

Is it truly happy?   Or is it frantically trying to figure out a world that is overstimulating - a world that would make much more sense if it's human slowed down and taught it how to behave?

A lot of dogs come into care with unknown histories. Many of these dogs present with specific or generalized fear and anxiety.

It can be easy - so, SO easy - to attach a story to their behavior. In fact, it's becoming increasingly common for people to adopt dogs BECAUSE of their story. The more tragic, the better.

The problem with this is that it tends to freeze dogs into their neuroses. Their owner becomes so attached to the story, so emotionally invested, that they themselves cannot move past it. When the owner gets stuck, so does the dog.

Then the story becomes an excuse for poor / dangerous behavior.

"She's aggressive to the postman because one must have abused him."

He's leash reactive to other dogs because he was a 'bait dog'.

She runs from us when we grab the fly swat someone must have hit her with it.

In many cases, these behaviors are caused from a lack of experience in the critical period of socialization. Their inexperience can present itself as fear, anxiety, stress, and aggression; mechanisms they develop over time to cope.

But what exactly caused their dogs behavior is irrelevant. It's a fools errand to try to figure it out; an addictive oxytocin-fueled quest to justify a lack of action.

He's afraid of men? Make men = good things. He runs from the fly swatter? Pick the damn thing up and throw the dog a handful of steak a few times. See what happens.

When we own a dog, we're making a commitment to BETTER their life. Holding on to their past is doing the opposite. Show them you will take care, protect & make decisions for them by overcoming their problems, not nurturing them.

Our dogs can become stressed and anxious just like we can. When anxiety comes from situations like being left home alone. It is often referred to as separation anxiety.
 
Our dogs may show separation anxiety in a range of behaviors from full blown panic and destruction to minor sadness. Their anxiety could come from a wide range of stressful sources, most often some sort of change in the routine they are used to, loud sudden noises like thunder or fireworks, and many other causes. Often the cause is being left at home alone.
 
Signs your dog may have separation anxiety may become apparent when you are getting ready to leave home or before you can hear the thunder, they feel it.  They start to notice you are getting ready to leave before you leave. One thing you are going to keep in mind is if you want to try CBD to help with their separation anxiety. It is best to give it before they start to feel anxious. A daily dose of CBD is often recommended. 
 
Like humans, dogs that are stressed experience increased secretion of cortisol and adrenaline. When this occurs, their primitive flight or fight mechanism is activated and anxiety is often the result of this. Your dog's perspective: human life is foreign and complex, we set alarms to wake up, go to work away from home, go shopping and many other errands and then come back. During this time your dogs are at home waiting for you to return with no understanding of the demands of your life.
 
For some dogs this situation can be overwhelming, they are a different species with a different evolutionary line and cannot communicate or use logic like us humans can. ( well, some of us can)  Studies show that 20 -40% of dogs suffer from separation anxiety. With more and more people returning to work outside their home that number is expected to rise. 
 
One of the fastest growing trends in pet care is using CBD to help calm and treat pets with anxiety. Research has found that CBD can help manage anxiety by changing the brain's receptor response to serotonin. 
 
Cannabidiol: better known as CBD! CBD my work on the systems behind your dog's anxiety in order to address the underlying processes behind their separation anxiety and other ailments.
 
Your dogs have an endocannabinoid system just like we do. The endocannabinoid system plays a role in homeostasis within our and their body. That means it works with other systems and processes to address imbalances in hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Possibly bringing out a state of calmness that eases their separation anxiety.
 
Giving your dog's CBD every day gives you a base structure. Start with smaller daily doses. Work your way up as needed to find the amount that works best for your dog. Generally smaller dogs will do best with smaller amounts of CBD and larger dogs will do better with larger amounts of CBD to be effective. Just like us dogs have individual body chemistries that can widely affect how CBD helps them.
 
When looking for CBD for your dog here are a couple things to think about.
Always make sure your CBD comes from American grown hemp. Get CBD not hemp oil or hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. The seeds do not contain CBD. CBD comes from the flowing buds of the hemp plant. Look for Full Spectrum CBD. Broad Spectrum contains THC.
 
What can I do in addition to giving my dog CBD to help with separation anxiety?
Dogs are very good at feeling your energy. If you are worried, anxious or stressed about their separation anxiety, they will pick up on your emotions. Which can cause a cycle of stress for both of you. If possible, leave your house when your dog's energy and yours is as calm as possible. Saying bye to them 15 minutes before you have to leave. Having comforting toys and blankets for them.
 
I have learned from studies that dogs think in terms of associating a stimulus to a response. This in part is how your dogs can sense you are getting ready before you leave. ​

CAÑON CITY — Adopting a stray dog running loose on the streets led one Colorado woman down the path to a new business.
Beth Black of Cotopaxi, founder of Happy Dogs, saw a red hound running along U.S. Highway 50 about 10 years ago.

She caught him and took him in. When Douggie got older, he started having seizures.
“He would have a seizure every other day and we were going to put him down because we couldn’t stand to see him go through that,” she recalled.
She started doing some research and learned about CBD, which is the acronym for cannabidiol. It is derived from the hemp plant, a cousin of the marijuana plant.
When she began treating Douggie with CBD, it drastically reduced his seizures to the point where he only has one or two a month and “he is still alive, we still have Douggie,” she said.

Black started developing her own CBD dog treats and Happy Dogs was born. The products have varying impacts depending on the dog but are said to help reduce aches and pain, improve mood, lessen muscle tension and anxiety, enhance mobility and increase stamina.
Black designed the business’s logo and labels and launched a website. The business sells about 70 to 80 percent of its orders online to customers across the country.
She also offers the products at the antique and collectible store Autumn’s Attic at 428 Main St. in downtown Cañon City.
Black has since become a dog mom again to 1-year-old Molly, a Boston terrier. Molly gets one CBD treat a day to help with her allergy to grasses.
Some customers also use the CBD treats for their cats. Each treat has 2 milligrams of pure CBD so they can be cut in half for smaller animals such as cats and Chihuahuas.
Black then expanded into CBD offerings for humans, including a tincture (that can also be given instead of the treats for larger pets), gummies and a pain cream. The cream was inspired by someone close to Black who was having trouble managing neurogenic pain caused by a crushing injury.
“It got her up and out of her wheelchair,” Black said.
The CBD oil used in the products is “locally sourced and is tested at zero THC,” the psychoactive compound in marijuana, Black said.

Black also created a CBD soap for humans, but she only sells that at Autumn’s Attic so that she can keep up with demand and continue to make it in small batches.
The most recent product she added is a CBD-free dog treat, “for people who want to give constant treats. They’ve told me they would love to give their dogs more treats,” Black said.
The new treats are grain-free and contain chicken, chickpea flour, flaxseed, cane molasses, tomato, carrot and turmeric. Turmeric is said to help with joint pain and inflammation and “tastes good,” she said.
“I wanted healthy treats as clean as we can possibly make them," Black said. "They should be as healthy as possible and since lots of dogs have the grain allergy, they are grain free,” Black said.
“I just love dogs — they are fun and a lot of fun to work with,” she said.

So let’s talk about pets and real estate! New homes sometimes come with fences and doggy doors and sometimes they don’t. Being a “dog” mom I understand these challenges. The first thing that goes up in my new home is a fenced yard. When necessity calls I want options. My cat has even taught herself to get into the house via the pet door.
The next thing that is a must-have is a pet door. Usually on the “happy” part of the news is a somewhat uplifting subject. And we are hearing more and more about how people who are self quarantining are pampering their pets they already have and adopting new dogs, cats, lizards, and other forms of pets.
Homeowners are sometimes cautious about pet doors and rightly so. You don’t want other critters wondering into your pets protected space. So my advice is keep the dog and cat food bowls up and out of the way when not being used. This may cut down on raccoons, mice and other unwanted “pets” in the protected space.
Hug your “happy dogs” and social distance from friends and family. Hopefully, this will all be done and gone soon. Happy dog, Happy Life.

There is nothing purer than the love of your four-legged friend. They love you unconditionally and expect nothing. They are a furry shoulder to cry on, or a content driving buddy on hour long road trips. If you are anything like me, you could not imagine life without your dog. So what can you do when they are in pain? 
​A few months ago, on one of our early morning walks, I noticed my 12-year-old Husky had a minor limp. He did not seem to be in pain, so I settled on it being a sore leg and kept an eye on it. With in a month he was hoping through the walks and barely able to get on the bed. I knew there was something wrong.

We saw the vet a few days later and I was told it was arthritis in his back, he was put on prednisone and gabapentin. It didn’t do much for him and Deizel was still sore. It slowed him down, but my tough old guy didn’t let it stop him. Continuing his walks daily he would play in the pond, or sniff out a squirrel, and at times frolicked through the empty corn fields like a deer. 
Finally, the day came, 5:30 am I opened the door to let my pups out we got to the walking trail behind my house and I realized I only had two of my three dogs. Scanning the back yard, I noticed Deizel laying on the back porch. He was not going to be joining us today. As soon as they opened, I called the vet back, all she offered to do was a higher dose of pain killers. This was making him tired and not himself. I was desperate I wanted my friend back. I wanted to see his puppy spirit again.
